MEET LEO.

Leader, Teacher, Old Soul

Leo is 23 years old, and his story began with his arriving at the farm long before he was ever considered a rescue. I was told that he had come from Mexico on a trailer with several other horses and brought to a local facility to be sold. Somehow, at exactly the right moment, our paths crossed. The first things that caught my attention were his ears and his eyes. At the time, he was underweight, his ears seeming almost too large for his frame. But it was his eyes that stayed with me – deep, expressive, and full of quiet awareness. People often say you can see a horse’s soul in its eyes, and with Leo, that felt undeniably true.

From the very beginning, Leo’s presence was strong. It was immediately clear that he wasn’t going to blend into the background, he was going to lead. Today, among all our horses on the farm, Leo is the natural leader. Not because of his size or force, but because of his intelligence. He’s thoughtful, observant, and always a step ahead. Leo’s intelligence has earned him the nickname Houdini, though even that hardly captures it. He can open doors, unlatch gates, and orchestrate escapes with impressive precision. At one point, we had to electrify the entire property because Leo enjoyed slipping off the farm and taking a few companions with him on neighborhood walks. While it sounds amusing, it led to some genuinely scary moments. Leo is fully aware of what he’s doing, and I believe these antics are part of how he leads – showing the others what’s possible and quietly asserting his role at the top.

Yet the most remarkable side of Leo is his ability to teach. Of all the animals here, he has had the greatest impact on the people who’ve crossed his path. Early on, Leo gave lessons and helped introduce many children to their first experiences in the equestrian world. He has a unique way of asking people to show up with confidence. If they don’t, he will test them, but never harshly. Instead, he encourages growth by requiring presence, clarity and self-trust. In doing so, Leo helps people find confidence they didn’t realize they had. Leo is more than a leader of the herd. He is a steady influence, a quiet teacher, and the heart of this farm.
